4 Weeks & 5 Days Pregnant

This entry added on 4 January 2007.

I am so used to putting Anna first that I have to constantly remind myself that I need to rank myself an equal priority right now (although since she complains louder, I'm sure she'll still be first for a while). We went on the train ride at the park today and we sat closer to the front than we should have because I could smell the exhaust the whole way. My first thought was that this wasn't good for Anna but then I realized that it's not good for me and Baby either. Same with something we were eating at lunch today, I picked out a deli turkey sandwich and I wondered if it was really OK for Anna to eat but remembered that I probably shouldn't be eating it either. When I was pregnant with Anna all I had to think about was me and Anna. I guess this is part of the adjustment of having two kids already. Anna has to wait for me to go to the bathroom more often already, too. I realize she will probably be a pretty different kid by the time Baby arrives as well.

I don't feel very different this week than pre-pregnancy except maybe getting tired more easily. I haven't hit extreme fatigue yet and no morning sickness yet, either. It probably doesn't help that I took last week off from running so that I have to kind of start all over there, too. My current plan with exercise is to keep up running as much as I can until it gets uncomfortable. I am keeping an eye on my heart-rate and am having to stop and walk several times during a run to bring it down. I am taking care to not get overheated as well. Luckily there is a lot of shade on the trail that I run on or, on weeks like this when Craig is out of town, I wouldn't be able to get out with Anna in the stroller. We will probably end up going to the Y soon, but right now she's got a runny nose/looks like she's teething so that will probably wait until after Anita goes home (Anna can stay here with Anita if I go to the Y next week!). I am disappointed that I won't get to run the 10-miler this October, but I can make that a goal for after Baby now.

For the record, I bought some disposable gloves and am changing the litter myself this week, although I am not excited about that at all. The nurse said it was fine to do as long as I washed my hands afterwards (which I am doing, too), but I remember last time I asked the doctor and she said "no way!" So, I'm not sure if I'll continue to do it myself or if I'll recruit the neighbor next time Craig is out of town.

According to Your Pregnancy Week by Week, Baby is .014 inch to about .04 inch (.36mm to 1mm) in length.

Meerkats & The Train

We went to the zoo today and Anna really took to the meerkats. They were digging holes in the dirt and running around so she couldn't help but fall in love with them. I had to go back a second time as she talked about them all the way through the zoo. We also checked out a few of the new zoo babies—the giraffe, a monkey, and more.

We got a pretty good show with the monkeys this morning. They were chasing each other around and Anna and another little girl (a little older) were laughing so hard at them that that alone was worth all of the traffic we had to sit in there and back today.

She rode on a bear on the carousel and then we walked past the antelopes on our way to lunch. After lunch we rode on the train. She really liked it again. We also saw quite a few school buses in the parking lots around the park which she found particularly thrilling.

She has a bit of a runny nose and is drooling a bit today so I'm thinking she must be working on a new tooth. She has never actually gotten drooly when teething, so this is kind of new. She is still in a good mood though so that helps a lot.

Bless You!

I was sneezing as Anna & I came down the stairs this morning and she said (her version of) "bless you."

We went to the Children's Museum with Bryan & Sara today and Anna had a lot of fun again. I was talking to her at dinner about what we did there today and she'd say "Children's Museum again" so I'd repeat it all back again. I'm glad we bought the membership since she apparently likes it so much!

Anna has a great eye for spotting fire trucks, cement trucks, school buses, big trucks, dump trucks, and (insert any color) cars while we're driving on the road. She has also started telling me "red light" and "green light." Sometimes, for true backseat-driver-effect, she throws in "red light-stop" and "green light-go."

38:08

I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the thermometer and it said 59% humidity. I stepped outside and it actually felt cool out! Very refreshing. So, even though the sun was out, I felt really good during the run. I had Anna with me and no Nano today. Anna is such a good little running partner though, she didn't complain the whole trip. I had to stop a couple of times to adjust her sunglasses but that was about it. I did have to stop and walk a few times again today to get my heart rate back down. I was running above my THR, but just a few BPM above it so I didn't back off as much today as I did on Sunday.

Story Time

I did the gluing (but Anna ran the glue stick—with the lid on—all over the picture) and Anna drew a couple of light waves of water with the crayon. She seemed pretty please with our joint-effort piece of art.

We went to story time today and Anna seemed to really like it. She liked the library, too. Aunt Rachel would be proud as most of our lunch conversation consisted of "Library. Fun! Story time. Fun!" Repeat.

This week's theme was boats and I didn't realize that story time had actually started up again last week and we missed the train theme (something Anna is still really into after riding on the train last week). We did pick up a couple of books that she seems to like though so that was a fun way to spend our day: reading and re-reading and re-reading these new books over and over and over again.

Silver Car and White Dog

Craig put Anna's carseat in his car for the first time today. They went to the Children's Museum by themselves so I could spend some much-needed time cleaning up my office. I think Anna had as much fun riding in daddy's silver car as she did at the museum.

Tonight we had our friends Erica & Joel over for dinner. They are just getting back to the US from living overseas (we met them in Korea) and they brought over their dog, Harley, who Anna really liked. Erica, Joel, & Harley are moving back here sometime next month so we will hopefully get to see more of them soon!

39:55

I have been really slacking off this week. Craig had to be to work early most days this week and I just can't peel myself out of bed before 6 AM. Today's run wasn't too bad in spite of my laziness. I really tried to stay in my THR and actually stopped to walk a few times when I got in the high zone—I'm going to try to focus on this more again. It was really humid though which made it a little less enjoyable. Next week isn't looking promising unless Anna & I actually head to the Y for a change. I am really ready for the heat to die down although I know it probably won't until October.

I'm a Little Teapot

We've had fun teaching Anna to sing along with songs lately. She was a bit distracted by something she needed to wipe on her leg for this one, but she also can fill in the words to "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Blue Skies" (Willie Nelson).

3 Weeks & 6 Days Pregnant

This entry was added on 4 January 2007.

I made my doctor's appointments because I had to call and ask about going to the dentist and changing the cat litter (and no sign of my period today and I've had several more positive tests so I feel like it's really happening). My first doctor's appointment is with nurse and is just an interview. That is on September 20 (I'll be 7.5 weeks). My first appointment with my doctor is on October 2 (I'll be 9 weeks). It was definitely much more satisfying to just walk right in to the clinic in Korea! It feels like such a long time to wait! I have no real idea what to expect either, I'm guessing they'll listen for the heartbeat at the October 2 appointment.

My partial crown has really started hurting this week when I drink anything (cold or room temperature) so I have to go in and have them look at it next week. I needed to ask the doctor what is/isn't allowed medication-wise first though. Also, Craig is going to be out of town next week and the cat's litter box needs to be changed. Either I hire the pet sitter to come out three times ($45), ask the neighbor kid to do it, or do it myself and am very careful to not breathe anything in or get anything on my hands. I'm not ready to tell the neighbors and I don't necessarily want to fork over $45 for three litter clean-ups. I suppose the other option is to kick the cat outside for the week, but I don't think she'd make it five minutes!

Shadows & Strings

Tuesday afternoon when we went out to get the mail, Anna noticed her shadow on the ground. So we observed hers, mine, the mail's, and her cup's shadows which she seemed to find pretty interesting.

Yesterday afternoon when we went out to get the mail, a red truck drove by and Anna said, "red truck" (pause) "drive by." She is stringing words together really well. She wanted to read The Foot Book last night and it was on top of the stack of books by the chair in her room so she said, "Foot book up high." Amazing!

I'm also always impressed that she recognizes each of her books by the spine and has a name for them all (a lot of times at least one word from the title—obviously because I tell her the title of the book!—but sometimes by what picture is on the front).

Children's Museum

We met Sara, Bryan, Michelle, & Amelia at the Children's Museum today. Anna had fun although we didn't end up staying near Bryan and Amelia that much. She really liked the train set they had there because it had a tunnel just like the one she rode on last week (it also helped that there was a little school bus—her favorite thing to spot on the road!—to drive on the tracks). She also really liked the house again, the school room, and the fish tank. It's fun to see her checking out all of the new & fun stuff.

3 Weeks & 4 Days Pregnant

I have been foolishly testing too early all week, going to different stores trying to find the one that would give results the earliest. (I think it was a little too liberating to just pick one out without asking the pharmacist like in Korea). This morning I got a positive result! And I got another one this afternoon. I have a few more tests that I can use up so I'll keep testing until I run out—it's more fun when they're positive! I will wait until Monday to call the doctor's office since my period isn't actually due until Friday and I'll feel better knowing that I at least missed that before I set up a first appointment.

I am planning to send a photograph of Anna holding a big sister sign to the grandparents and aunts & uncles, but I think I'll wait until later to tell other people although I'm not entirely sure how long I can hold out.

Baby's due date is May 5, 2007 and although we're not entirely sure where we'll be at that time, I'm hopeful that everything will go as smoothly as last time and that one of the grandmas will be able to be with us.

According to Your Pregnancy Week by Week, "Baby is only a group of cells that are multiplying and growing rapidly. The embryo is the size of the head of a pin and would be visible to the naked eye if it weren't inside you. The group of cells doesn't look like a fetus or a baby... During this first week, the embryo is about .0006 inch (0.150mm) long."—simply amazing!

Playgroup

Getting ready for the other kids to show up!

We attempted a group picture (notice I had to ask one of the other moms to hold Anna back on the couch!) but none of the kids were really into it.

Anna is just out of this picture, but she is on her own having "fun."

We hosted playgroup here today (our first time since we joined in May!). Anna wasn't too sure when the first person arrived and then asked me to hold her or to take her upstairs for about the first hour and forty minutes (of a two-hour-long playgroup!). Finally, with twenty minutes left, she was OK on her own. She had very little problem sharing her toys with the other kids which I was glad of. She had to practice taking turns sitting on her soft chair, but she didn't want to sit in it when someone was near her anyway. I guess she likes her personal space.

The Germ Tree

We met Sara, Bryan, Lesley, & Caroline for a snack at the mall and then we went to the "germ tree." Anna seemed to really enjoy it but I left the little camera on the front seat of the car so I didn't get any pictures. Maybe now that school is back in session, and Anna isn't taking a morning nap, we can go back to the tree more often—at least until it cools off outside!

Train Ride

Anna & Craig went on a little train ride this morning near the zoo. I didn't go because we didn't bring enough cash (I assumed under 2 years old would be free). They were pretty cute sitting on the train together but I had given the camera to Craig so I didn't get a shot of them on it. Anna really seemed to like it as she really enjoyed talking about the train, the tunnel it went through, and all of the bridges (overpasses) we went under on our way back home.

I feel like she is much more work facing forward in the car because she wants me to acknowledge everything she says and sees. I don't think she'd be happy with me if I turned her around though because in addition to reminiscing about the train, she has been saying "car, forward."

62:51

I couldn't decide what distance to run this morning. So I started out thinking 3, then 3.8, then 4.4, and then decided to just go for it and do 5.4. Except that it was really 5.68 miles. I got out early enough that I had no problems with the sun so I felt pretty good most of the way. I did stop at the park by our house to get a sip of water from the drinking fountain so I could make the last .8 mile-loop to our house.

Facing Forward

We finally turned Anna around in the car this morning. Craig had to fix a bad installation I did on the car seat last week so we just decided to flip it (I was going to wait until next month). Anna loved it! She talked about everything she saw and when we got on the freeway, she yelled, "oh my!" when she saw all the cars and things going by.

Reading

Anna can finally climb up into the chair in her room (she still needs a boost onto the couches downstairs). She was pretty excited about this and wanted to sit down and rock and read some books by herself this afternoon.

One, Two

I asked Anna to bring me her white shoes this afternoon so she walked over to her shoes, picked one up, handed it to me and said, "one." Then she turned around and got the other shoe and said, "two."

The Warm-Up

Grandpa's book looks good, but I don't want to get too close to him just yet.

That book is so interesting, I want to get closer, but I don't want to rush it.

Be cool. You don't want to look too eager.

We're having so much fun reading this book together, grandpa!

Grandpa stopped in for a short visit today and Anna didn't have too much trouble warming up to him.

I felt really sluggish today! That dip in mile two is where I stopped and turned around because I saw a dog without an owner in my path. I took a different route and ended up going just the tiniest bit further than my usual route so I guess it worked out in the end. Usually I like to try to pick up the pace at the end of my run, but apparently my sluggishness got the best of me in that last mile. Oh well, at least I spent more time in my THR.

Children's Museum

I finally took Anna to the Children's Museum this morning. She had a really great time with the house, the grocery store, the chess game, and then some other random stuff. We spent about one hour there and I think we could have spent more but I didn't bring Anna's water in so went back out to the car (where her water was) and went home.

Oh My!

Anna sat down and looked at her box-full of finger puppets and shouted "Oh my!" so we got her to say it again for the camera. She's been saying this for about a week now. I must say it more than I realize (in the context of "oh my, what a mess" or "oh my, those glasses are pretty" or whatever). Today she is saying "fall down" a lot whenever something drops or she falls down. Two-word phrases are piling up around here.

Seventeen Months

Anna has been making this face in place of saying "help" or "thank you." Not sure where she picked this up or if it just a coincidence.

Multi-tasking.

We have been playing "I can see you" above & below the ottoman. Anna will say "see you" and I am supposed to look under the ottoman for her.

Anna was seventeen months yesterday! I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone.

I got out early (dark) and had a great run. I sprinted the intersections, hoping it would be obvious on the Nike graph, but I don't think it is. That big dip you see in mile 2 is when I was having to skip through a ton of music. Today's mission is to get my own playlist on Craig's Nano because we do not have the same taste in music, apparently!

Friends

Bryan, Anna, & Caroline.

Craig, checking out what life would be like as a dad of triplets—he did a pretty good job!

We had Sara, Matt, Bryan, Lesley, & Caroline over for dinner tonight.

We tried grilling pizzas for the first time and I think we were pretty successful. We did one chicken & garlic, one carmelized onion & goat cheese, and one cheese & tomato pizza. We used one refrigerated, canned pizza dough, and the other two crusts came from a box of pizza dough mix. I will post the recipe for the caramelized onoin & the cheese & tomato pizzas over on the recipe blog shortly.

Anna did ok sharing her toys tonight. She wasn't thrilled anytime Caroline had her pink doll (the one in the picture) so I'll be putting that one away when we have playgroup here in a couple of weeks.

What I thought was 3.2 miles is actually 3.8 miles. This explains my time in the 5K last month and it explains the difference in pacing for my 2.5 mile and the longer runs I did last month. I think the mileage got messed up because I didn't drive it in one piece, but probably on the way to the store and then the other part on the way back. Bad math or bad memory, it seems.

Anyway, today's run was really good because I got out before the sun was too high and the weather felt great. I also ran fast that last mile just so I could see the spike on my Nike graph. Too much fun! I think this Nike+ has already paid for itself (of course we already had the Nano which makes a big difference!) since knowing I'm not as slow as I thought I was has boosted my running confidence a bit!

Stars aligned for the Nike+ & Nano today. However, I am seriously questioning my 3.2 mile run and/or the Nike+ because my times just don't seem to be adding up at all. I'm going to have to re-drive/re-map/re-run (withthe Nike+) my 3.2 mile route and investigate.

The good news is that I felt pretty normal again running this morning. It helped that I got up before the sun was too high. I was disappointed though that I didn't run the local 5K with Amy as planned. I did go to cheer her on and wished I had run it with her. It just wasn't worth the risk of feeling as bad as I did on Thursday though!

Hopefully this will be a good week for collecting data for the Nike+ system though. You can see a screen shot from my Nike+ account online. I just have this morning's run in there since the last time I tried it the data was bunk.

I just checked out my "3.2 mile" run on HARRA's route creator and it looks like it is really 3.771 miles. That would account for a lot of discrepencies in my life. I'm definitely going that route tomorrow to see what the Nano says. This would explain why last month I was able to run the 5K so much faster than my usual run--it was .6 miles shorter than what I was used to! I will wait until the Nano confirms my distance to go back and attempt to update my total-miles-log.

Portraits

I haven't tried to get a portrait of Anna all summer (so it seems). I guess I did try when Jacob & Sam were here and then again when Owen & Raisa were here but didn't get anything worthwhile then and those were just quick attempts. She reminded me why that was this morning. She is the master of avoiding eye-contact with my camera! Still, I think I got some super-sweet ones with her blonde curly hair. I do realize it's asking a lot of an-almost-seventeen-month-old to sit still for the camera for more than two seconds!

Hard Chair, Heavy Book

Anna woke up this morning with a very distinct agenda. She saw her "heavy book" and said "heavy book, hard chair!" Her "hard chair" is a booster seat we bought a while back when we were having some company over. Anna just loves to get in and out of it so it is in the living room for a while now.

David Sedaris: For Sharon

Sharon's not thrilled with David Sedaris, but I really enjoyed Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. So much so that I've asked Craig to read it, too. I remember hearing an excerpt of the book on NPR and then reading about half of it in December 2004 (Craig was skiing for the day and I went to the outlet malls then read my book) before I finallly finished it last night. I was actually laughing out loud at some of the stories.

I'm enjoying this reading binge I'm on I think because I'm actually reading books that have been on my shelves for a while and I chose them myself (unlike the last book-club book that I couldn't even bring myself to finish!). Or maybe I'm just figuring out what kind of books I like?

44:43

I'm not sure how I got home in nearly the same time as when I run 3.2 miles, but I was NOT feeling good today when I did it. I must have not been pacing myself well in the beginning or I run as slow as I walk (I do not think this is the case, however). I am feeling a lot better today: I can actually breathe through my nose, etc. No stuffy-feeling in my head. I guess this provided false-confidence in my ability to bounce-back. I had to stop and walk at least four times, got goosebumps from over-heating, and ended walking. I even took a shortcut at the end through the grass just so I could get home.

So, I have had to cancel my plans to run the local 5K this weekend which is really disappointing. I will just have to plan on the 26th. And I'll also have to plan to get up early from now on and run before the sun is up because that just really gets me every time. This will also solve the problem of the Nano being in Craig's car when I run, like it was today!

A few more things I forgot to add in my "Little Things" post (it became quite long when I didn't do it in July!). Anna has been saying "hoju" ("hold you") when she wants to be picked up and carried. I remember stories of Jacob saying the same thing so I wasn't too surprised when she started doing it, too.

She definitely thinks she is "you" though as she will point to herself when I say to Gertie the cat, "let us pet you." Gertie has actually been quite acommodating lately and Anna has gotten to pet her several times the past few days. Anna's pet is a very gentle one-finger pet and she giggles whenever Gertie indulges her so.

Anna is working on nodding her head yes, but still says "No" and shakes her head when we sing "do you KNOW the muffin man." I'm signing "know" but I don't think it's getting through that there is a difference.

By the way, instead of napping today, Anna is upstairs saying "betdo", "OK", "sit up!", and other things I can't quite make out over the monitor. Hopefully she'll get tired and actually take a nap before too long!

New Signed Word: pig

August Little Things

Anna was sick earlier this week (still has a bit of a cough) and then I got it this weekend. So my plans for a long run this morning were scrapped. I actually spent most of the weekend in bed reading books and napping while Craig and Anna played together.

I had promised an updated list of animal noises before I left for Paris (and she's done them for a while, but they're not on the list: mouse, coyote/wolf, owl, chicken, rooster, fish, bird, duck, chick, and the best one: porcupine ('ow!")

Anna definitely knows a lot of her colors already but she doesn't actually know what you're saying when you say "what color is that?" She doesn't know what the word "color" is so if you get one color going she'll say the rest, or she'll just do it on her own without prompting.

She is saying a lot of two-word and the occasional three-word sentance ("tree blow breeze" for "trees blowing in the breeze"). The other night she asked for a snack before bed and I said she could have a banana. Did she want it sliced or whole and she said "knife cut." It is so nice to be able to communicate!

When we were playing with the play-doh the other day I made a cinnamon roll and she was saying something that sounded like "yellow" or "lid" and I could tell she was getting frustrated with me when i didn't understand, but when I figured out she wanted me to make a "little" cinnamon roll she got really excited and pleased with herself that she had effectively asked for what she wanted.

Anna was really good about saying or signing "please" for a while, but now that she figured out how to say "OK" (instead of just "k") she approves a lot of her own requests instantly without saying please. If we are slow to fulfill the request though she will throw in a "please."

Anna will finish the rhyme "to market, to market, to buy a plum bun; home again, home again, marketing's... " (and Anna wil say, very pleased) "DONE."

Craig taught her the phrase "I bet you do" this weekend. Anna just says "bet-do" but it is super cute. I guess this was when they went to the park and he asked if she wanted to swing/slide and he'd say "I bet you do." I think my being sick this weekend was actually a good thing because the two of them really got to spend a lot of alone-time together.

The Da Vinci Code & Mathilda

I decided to finally start reading The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown last week. I only say "finally" because I bought the book soon after it was released while we were in Korea. I must have been ordering from Amazon, read about the book, and ordered it. I was in the middle of something else when it arrived so I loaned it to someone. By the time they finished I was on to something else so I loaned it out again. Then Craig read it. Then once I was pregnant, the only thing I read was pregnancy books. Then parenting books. And now when I sat down to read the book at last I found myself prepared to not like it because of all of the hype. Nope, I got hooked into it, too. I wouldn't say it was the best book ever, but as countless others before me have stated: it was a page turner.

Mathilda by Roald Dahl was a book that Sharon had sent to Anna for a birth-day gift. I started reading it aloud to Anna while rocking her in her room during part of her "sleep training" last year. We almost finished it but suddenly Anna was able to fall asleep on her own and I didn't have to spend time in her room waiting. Of course this is a children's book, but I had never heard of it before. It was cute although I think Anna will enjoy it more when she is older (8 years old, says the back of the book) than I did at 28/29!

Craig had to go into work early this morning and I couldn't convince myself to get up at 5:30 to run so I waited until it was nice and sunny and went with Anna. No Nano today since I think it is in Craig's car. I did reposition the receiver though and it stayed put for the entire run. Next time I will bring the Nano...

I have decied to make 3.2 miles my new short run and not do the 2.5 miles so often. I'd like to at least be getting 30 minutes in each time I run. I've just been taking it easy the past few times since my workouts have been so sporadic with all of the travel we did last month.

Play-Doh

Anna is really into playing with Play-Doh lately. We can while away quite a bit of time at the table making balls to roll down a slide, cinnamon rolls, blocks to stack, and now we can enjoy fine jewelry, too! Anna likes to squish and squeeze the Play-Doh and to put it in the cup and then dump it out. Sometimes I wonder who is having more fun with it though: Anna or the adult playing with her.

The Nike+ didn't register for at least a mile so that data is no good. It was dark when I left, so I couldn't see what was happening and then I clipped the Nano to my shorts and never looked at it anyway. Craig thinks maybe it was because we tied the receiver to my shoe sideways (I didn't even try on the Nike+ shoe where the receiver fits neatly into the sole). I guess we'll try repositioning it and see if that gets it to work next time.

My shoes were comfortable though. I bought a pair of Saucony's which I've never had before.
