29 August 2003 (Friday) Craig & I hope to do some traveling while we're in Korea and I think we should consider a "long-haul" flight (maybe Australia?) simply so we can enjoy the "magic crews" on Asiana Airlines.
28 August 2003 (Thursday)
Mike was in town from San Francisco today so we met him for dinner. He's been to Koje island and did not have good things to say about the shipyard's cafeteria food. Hopefully that's just because it is a shipyard's cafeteria. (However, he was not at Daewoo's shipyard so maybe there's hope for Craig's lunches at work...) On the Korean front, the shipper came today to assess what we're sending to Korea. We can ship up to 2,000 pounds of stuff. I doubt what we're bringing will weigh that much.
26 August 2003 (Tuesday)
Gertie & I are flying to Colorado today where she will live with my parents while we find out what the vet facilities are like in Okpo. Hopefully, she will be able to move to Korea with us when I come back to the US for a visit in February or March 2004. Gertie has lived with me since May 1998 and it will be hard to let her go--I think she'll have a harder time adjusting than Tillie.
25 August 2003 (Monday) If you want to mail us a letter (or care package!) in South Korea, go to the United States Postal Service's International Postal Rate Calculator to find out the rates. Choose the type of package you're mailing and then choose "Korea, Republic of (South Korea)" from the drop-down menu.
24 August 2003 (Sunday)
We had a going away party with our neighbors today. I think AJ is taking the fridge, Charles is going to put his grass clippings in our yard (why doesn't he mulch?), Steve H. is going to have parties, and I'm sure there were other plots, but I do plan to take photos of each room in our house before we go, guys, so just put it back when you're finished!
20 August 2003 (Wednesday) I stayed one night with Corrine, Scott, & Owen to help Tillie adjust to her new home (okay, to help me adjust to the fact that she wasn't coming home with me). Today we went to Brian's office, looked through a couple of stores (Owen got a free scented votive just because he's super-cute!), and ate lunch.
18 August 2003 (Monday) I visited my family in Greeley. I stayed with my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. My parents and grandma were also there. I had a good time with them and was sad to go knowing I won't see them again until sometime next year.
16 August 2003 (Saturday)
My mom & I drove up to Colorado to bring Tillie to live with Corrine, Scott, Owen, and Baby Girl Wright (due 10/15/03). I will miss Tillie so much during the next 15 months and it was very sad to leave her behind, but I know that she will love the Wrights and the Wrights will love her, too!
12 August 2003 (Tuesday) Just found out that I also need to get the Rabies Vaccine. This means our departure date will be delayed because it is a 3-dose procedure given on day 0, 7, and 21. Why didn't I know about this last week when I got the others? I don't think we'll ever know...
11 August 2003 (Monday) I got my International Driving Permit to use before I get my Korean Driver's license.
10 August 2003 (Sunday) "Everyday, crazy and amusing events are awaiting you" at Wal*Mart in Busan. I'm sure we will make our way there at some point in our 15 month stay. (Click on "all events" to check out the crazy and amusing events that await us.) You can compare prices on the circular at The Universal Currency Converter. It looks like the bananas on page one are $1.84 (not sure how many bananas you get for that price) and the mouse on page two is $12.48. I'm just not sure what some of those other items are! Edited to add (8/24/03):The circular has changed since I posted this, but you get the idea....
9 August 2003 (Saturday) Some of the books we're reading to learn more about Korea are:
8 August 2003 (Friday) Today I went to the doctor's office for my physical and to get my immunizations for our move. I got the following immunizations:
I get to go back twice more to finish the Japanese Encephalitis before we move and then I'll get the rest of the Hepatitis shots in Korea. You can read more about these immunizations at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web site.
6 August 2003 (Wednesday) This is the car that Craig will drive while in Korea. He thinks I should get a scooter and Sharon thinks I should get a Segway.... I'm thinking I'll try out walking/biking/the bus/taxis and maybe rent a car if I want to do my own day trips.
25 July 2003 (Friday) Download my ultra-dorky time-zone conversion chart in Excel or PDF format. Please note that South Korea does not observe Daylight Savings. Also, since I created this primarily for my own use, the highlighted portions are my waking hours. Below are some links I've found useful in preparation for our 15 month stay in S. Korea. Once we're there, watch for regular updates to this site with photos and info on what/how we're doing!
