29 December 2003 (Monday)

We got our green belts in TKD today! We will test for blue belts at the end of January.

27 December 2003 (Saturday)

Harley. 12/26/2003

We are taking care of Harley, Joel & Erica's dog, this weekend. She's a very different beast from Tillie--much more active! Harley is a Jindo and her breed is a Korean national treasure.

Merry Christmas! 12/25/2003

We opened presents in the morning, Craig made omelettes for breakfast, and we talked to both of our families.

This evening, we went to Brenda & Gerry's for Christmas dinner--Brenda made a wonderful Christmas meal for a large group of us. Most of the guests were from Newfoundland, like Brenda & Gerry, and Brenda made a wonderful Newfoundland meal of salt beef, pork, turkey, peas-pudding, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, and more. Erica made a deliciously moist chocolate cake.

After dinner we had a gift exchange where everyone brought a 10,000 Won (just less than $10 USD) gift and "wrapped" it in a black plastic shopping bag. I went through many gifts (as each person's name was drawn, they were able to either choose a gift that someone had already opened or choose a gift from Santa's bag), but I ended up with a keychain and Craig got some pens--not bad when you consider that for a few minutes, I had a dried squid among my gifts!

24 December 2003 (Wednesday)

We went to Jaynie & Chris' for Christmas Eve. Jaynie made chili, fudge, and other treats. It was nice to spend the evening with friends since we couldn't be at home with family.

23 December 2003 (Tuesday)

We had our test in TKD yesterday, we'll find out if we get our next belts on Monday since we don't have class Wednesday or Friday this week.

Tonight we went to the DSME Engineering Christmas party. Craig's friend "BM" invited us and we were the only non-Koreans there! It was fun though and we even got to sing Christmas songs--although Craig and I were the only ones singing in English! It was fun to try to identify the song as they sang it in Korean and then to try to pick up where they were in the song with the english words.

I just have two more people on my list to shop for and I'll do that on Wednesday morning at the grand-opening of the Lotte Mart in Tongyeong! I'm sure it will be crazy there, but that's something I haven't experienced this holiday season so it will be fun anyway!

19 December 2003 (Friday)

Normally our TKD test is scheduled for the last Friday of the month, but because that would be the day after Christmas this month, we are testing on Monday 12/22! Just three more days to practice my poomses! We (the yellow belts that are testing for green) will demonstrate the two poomses we've learned and then we will fight each other (instead of breaking boards).

17 December 2003 (Wednesday)

We went to the new Indian restaurant in town for dinner tonight. It was really good but since the restaurant has only been open since Monday, they were still working out a few kinks. There were a couple of items on the menu that they weren't ready for yet, and the Korean waitress had never had Indian food before she started working there so didn't know what was in one of the dishes so the manager came out (probably after talking to the chef) to tell me what was in the dish. Anyway, the food was delcious and we will definitely be going back.

13 December 2003 (Saturday)

Craig made bagels today--yum! 12/13/2003

Craig welcomed the KitchenAid stand mixer to Korea by putting it to work right away with making bagels. We haven't been to Costco in a while and Craig has been out of bagels for several weeks. Now he can make his own. Now, if he could just figure out how to make Honey Nut Cheerios, we'd be all set and never have a need for Costco.

11 December 2003 (Thursday)

One of the churches in town, decorated for Christmas. 12/11/2003

There really hasn't been too much of interest going on the past couple of days. Craig made it back to Korea on Tuesday night and had a bounty of fabulous American products for me. He brought a couple of items that we left in Texas as well, so it was really great that he was able to make the trip back home. He had a great time visiting the family in Colorado, which I was jealous of, but I'd rather one of us went than neither of us!

6 December 2003 (Saturday)

We ate in the room at the back. 12/06/2003

I went to dinner with my Taekwondo class tonight at the "chicken on the mountain" restaurant. We had pancakes, chicken, and rice soup. All of the food was really good and although some of the pancakes had seafood in them, we had ordered non-seafood ones as well (thank goodness!). We also had rice wine made by the restaurant which was also really good.

3 December 2003 (Wednesday)

Kimchi. 12/02/2003

Jaynie & Chris were kind enough to take me to dinner with them at the pork kalbi restaurant last night. The meat was good and I liked the kimchi that Jaynie ordered--now I just need to convince Craig to sit on the floor with me so we can go back. Plus, the meal was super cheap: it was less than $25 to feed three adults and two kids--you can't beat that!

2 December 2003 (Tuesday)

Craig is traveling in the US until 12/9 and then spending 12/9-10 in Ulsan for work, so I'm trying to think of ways to keep myself entertained. I'm doing OK so far as I'm usually fairly occupied during the day (TKD, water aerobics, shopping, etc).

I missed most of our Sunday Thanksgiving (although I did get to eat the food) because I was out taking photos of Jaynie's family. I wanted to note that Erica put a lot of effort into the coordination and setup of a fabulous Thanksgiving for all of us who were here for the holiday--THANK YOU, ERICA!
